RENEGADE MAGAZINE
For my final production project at university, I created a travel magazine called Renegade. The magazine was aimed at 20-35 year olds which we decided after conducting market and audience research.
One of my main hobbies is travel and travel photography so I decided it would be beneficial and enjoyable to combine these aspects with the project. The magazine includes articles and features that include, but are not limited to, destination guides, restaurant and hotel guides, UK holidays, working abroad, gap year information, festivals and the top places to visit. We decided on these articles because they are what our audience voted for in our audience research questionnaire asking what they would like to see in a travel magazine.
Nearly all of the images were taken by myself (apart from one article – London Restaurants), and any other vectors were acquired through legal means (they weren’t restricted by copyright laws).
For this project, we found that our magazine is in line with current trends in both the magazine and the travel and tourism industry because we know the audience and demographic that we are targeting and everything we need to do to gain their attention.
The project wasn’t just limited to creating a magazine, it was to create a business. We conducted market and audience research prior to creating the magazine as well as gaining interest on social networking sites. The work is well targeted because it appeals to younger audiences than our case studies have found, which means that we are approaching a different demographic from our ‘competitors’ and meaning we should be successful in our own right.
This project demonstrated my time management skills, design skills, research skills, journalism skills, planning, and co-operation skills. The skills that I can take away from this process will help me in my future career, and the enjoyment I have had from creating this magazine has reaffirmed my decision to go into a graphic design based career.
