BOOK COVERS PROJECT
This project has probably been my favourite to date. For part of my university course I engaged in a project where I had to throw myself out of my comfort zone and create something that I wouldn't normally do. The aim was to build on a skill we don't already have and I decided to take it 'old school' and create images using traditional methods such as drawing and painting.
I decided to re-create book covers and I was inspired by the work of Chip Kidd (most famously known for creating that iconic Jurassic Park logo). The book covers that I re-created were:
-
The Paper Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg
-
The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
-
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling
-
The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne
-
Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn
For The Scarlet Letter and Sharp Objects, I used copyright free images to not violate any copyright laws. The rest of the designs are my own work and designs. I felt that for this project it was important to go back to traditional methods to create something completely original. After all, despite the saying, people really do judge a book by it's cover.
The project allowed me to come up with new, creative ideas while engaging with materials that I would not normally use.
Here is a link to the entire portfolio for my project which demonstrates the pre-production aspects as well.
